Why is a Zinc Anode Important?
In water, especially in the marine environment with salt water, a natural process occurs that is called galvanic corrosion. This process occurs when dissimilar metals come into contact with each other in an electrolytic solution (such as water), creating a “battery effect.” The less noble metal then corrodes more quickly. Your zinc anode is specifically made from a less noble metal (zinc) that acts as a “sacrificial” metal. It attracts the corrosion that would otherwise attack the more expensive and critical components of your engine, such as the gear case and propeller. By proactively replacing your zinc anode, you avoid costly repairs and ensure that your engine continues to perform optimally year after year.
